In a bid to provide quality education and uplift underprivileged communities, Opolot Fred Foundation (OFF)I has broadened its partnership with Limkokwing University and Metropolitan International University (MIU) to offer educational scholarships.
Aimed at bridging the educational gap for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in Pingire County, the scholarships ensure they have the opportunity to pursue higher education and achieve their academic and professional aspirations.
The scholarship program under OFF’s Edu-Boost project, announced in a joint meeting with Beneficiaries and their Parents at Akoroi Primary School in Labor Subcounty, marks a significant step towards making higher education accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic status.
A total of 30 vulnerable yet academically gifted students in Serere District have taken up this this opportunity. Out of that number, 20 students have reported to Metropolitan International University for May, 2024 intake while 10 await to join Limkokwing University, Uganda campus for July, 2024.
Simon Ekungu Abaka, OFF’s Education coordinator informed OFF representatives and government officials present that 2024 scholarship cohort is composed of thirteen (13) female, and Seventeen (17) males chosen from three administrative divisions of Pingire, Labor, and Kidetok town councils under Serere District.
He explained that the scholarships cover tuition fees, while parents are responsible for functional fees and hostel expenses.
Representatives from both MIU and the Opolot Fred Foundation emphasized the transformative potential of education and their commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment.

“Education is a powerful tool for change, and we are proud to collaborate with the both MIU and Limkokwing University to support talented students who might otherwise be unable to afford a university education. This partnership aligns with our mission to nurture the next generation of leaders and problem solvers,” Hon. Opolot said.
He also called for more support from willing partners since there many numerous talented students in Pingire County who require external assistance upon completing their secondary education to smoothly transition to university.
“We have always believed in the power of education to break the cycle of poverty. By joining forces, we can provide deserving students with the resources they need to succeed academically and professionally. This scholarship program is a testament to our commitment to empowering communities through education,” Opolot remarked.
One of the scholarship recipients, Mercy Atim Opolot, who will be studying nursing at Metropolitan International University Uganda, expressed her gratitude to the MP for his dedication to assisting underprivileged students in obtaining a university education.
She pledged to work diligently to achieve her goals.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Amukun, a parent, expressed optimism that these scholarships will significantly assist the beneficiaries in realizing their aspirations of attending university, pursuing successful careers, and eventually giving back to the community once they graduate and secure employment.
The heartwarming and dignified scholarship award ceremony concluded with blessings and gratitude from church leaders.
Rev. Michael Ourum, the parish priest of Labor Church of Uganda under Kasilo Archdeaconry, wished the beneficiaries a safe and prosperous journey as they embark on their university studies to pursue degrees in various fields and fulfill their aspirations.
He encouraged the students to pay it forward and support needy individuals in their communities to bring about positive change.
The partnership also includes plans for community outreach programs aimed at raising awareness about the importance of education and encouraging more students to pursue higher studies.
By removing financial barriers and offering comprehensive support, these partnerships pave the way for a brighter future for countless students from fishing communities of Serere, demonstrating the profound difference that strategic alliances can make in the realm of education.
